What is this Indicator? This indicator shows the percentage of adults under 65 who either receive health insurance through their employer or purchase it privately. People over 65 qualify for Medicare benefits.
Why this is important: Private insurance plans often provide more comprehensive benefits and easier access to care than public plans. However, private plans can be very expensive for employers as well as individuals. A high rate of private insurance coverage may indicate greater financial security, since it means that more businesses are able to provide insurance, and more individuals can afford to purchase it when necessary. Areas with high rates of private insurance coverage also place less strain on the public programs that are available.
Technical note: The distribution is based on data from 44 California counties and county groups. |
